Boise Cotillion
Nifty 50’s Dance Thursday, January 5th, 2012
Hope you have had a wonderful holiday season filled with fun and traditions! We are now ready for the fun of 2012! Our Holiday Gala was a wonderful event! I was impressed with the reception line introductions, and the polite treatment to one another. The ladies and gentlemen have now learned the box step of the waltz or foxtrot, with a turn and the proper hand hold. Additionally, they have begun learning the basics of the swing, which will be great fun at the 50's dance. Please take the opportunity to share at home what has been learned, as this is great reinforcement.
Some of the social instruction that has been taught includes:
Escort Position
Boys offer the right arm in an escort position to the girl. The elbow is out to the side with palm of the hand resting easily on the right lower stomach area. Girls, remember the boys are always on the left (wedding ring finger): when offered an arm to escort you, thread through the back of the offered arm.
Introductions
Stand tall, look the person in the eye, smile, and give a firm handshake. Ladies and gentlemen of Cotillion enter the ballroom through a short receiving line to practice introductions and leave the party by thanking a host/hostess and expressing what they liked about the evening.
Dance Etiquette
Following the Grand March, in which the first dance partners are matched, introductions are made. As we change partners, they thank their current partner, and then greet the new partner with a handshake and introduction. Each Cotillion member is treated with the utmost respect.
Refreshments
Girls remove their gloves and hand to the boys who place them in their pocket during refreshments. Boys serve the girl, and then themselves. Boys escort girls to the chair, indicating which chair the girl will use. Girl is always seated to the right of the boy. Girl crosses in front of the boy and sits down, feet on the floor, knees together, or legs crossed at the ankles.
Thank you to all of the December chaperones! In assigning chaperones I try to choose from the list with regard to your indicated preferences. If you really want to chaperone at an upcoming dance, please email or call me, as I choose from the list a random.
I hope you enjoyed participation in the Holiday Gift exchange. Your child was instructed to write a thank you note. If the gift your child received did not include the address however had the name, you may bring the thank you note to Cotillion. If you brought a gift and did not receive a thank you note, consider this note a thank you for your participation. Please be aware that some people do forget to write the notes, or lose the tag that had the gift givers name, so please do not be disappointed if you do not receive a thank you note.
Our upcoming Cotillion is on Thursday, January 5th. This is our Nifty 50’s Dance! The dress is 50’s style or you can always wear your Cotillion clothes. Suggestions for 50’s look for boys include: jean or khakis etc. with cuffs rolled up, long sleeve white shirt with sleeves rolled or white t-shirt with sleeves rolled (no inappropriate logos please)and white socks with Cotillion shoes or other. Don’t forget the grease for that jellyroll. Suggestions for 50’s look for girls include: a full skirt, or poodle skirt, white blouse, white socks folded down, and don’t forget that scarf in the pony. Please wear your gloves!
Looking forward to seeing you “Rock Around the Clock”!
